Context
Market - 18-25 both genders, has elements for both.
Problem 1 - Graphic Novels and comics often have a normal convention of panelling and can be too literal.
Joker by Brian Azzarello scanned
Solution 1 - Deviate from Convention. Abstract approach. Black and white, a consistent brown perhaps.
Charlie Adlard The Walking Dead scanned
Problem 2 - Moving onto Theme. I'd like to stress although my story is Sci-fi with action, it doesn't revolve around beefcake space marines flying hyperspeed space-ships into explosions to save planets.
New Warriors comic scanned
Solution 2 - My story is a personal journey, following a family and their problems/relationships. There is action too; the story is set in a war-stricken world.
*see "Script" in "Final Work" for Content*
Style and Technique
- Traditional methods, experiments needed. It's likely I'll scan in brown textures. I'll be using Black and white with only snippets of colour for effect.
Abstract approach perhaps.
Ashley Wood Metal Gear Solid pieces.
- USP - Expression in my artwork and layout. i.e. using large blacks to emphasise the message and sometimes an extreme depiction for lighting.
- USP - Comes from story and inconsistencies in style occasionally in style for effect of perception and feeling.
- Limited palette for consistency will contrast the previous point.
Step by Step
- Anatomy, perspective, buildings, landscapes, expressions, guns, costumes etc studies.
- Research and studies will go parallel to production. This is good for me because I'm always learning and improving and helps produce finals consistently and keeps me on target. The time plan will simply be -
storyboard - appropriate studies - produce
Summary
My originality will be traditional methods that bend and break conventions in the same area of work. Perhaps I'll create digital work using traditional materials like textures.
My story has taken a lot of time and effort, but I've settled on this sci-fi action universe that actually focuses on family relationships rather than the world around it. I feel this is different to what is usually done within this type of universe.
In terms of strategy to sell, I'd need to do lots of research into the sort of places/publishers I can approach. Perhaps even start a kickstarter to see the community's response to my pitch. I will consider creating it as a web comic too to give my comic the opportunity to gain exposure and fans.

Evaluation
I scrapped my original idea because I wasn't happy with it, and wasn't enjoying working on it, so I thought I'd start afresh, with an idea I was more comfortable with working on. I'm a fan on the universe in which my story occurs in, and I have experience with family matters, as I'm sure everyone does, so the story shouldn't be hindered by that.
I'm looking forward to working on it more. Studies are interesting and I'm always improving. I felt that this project would also test and push myself into the area I'd like to specialise in the future, Graphic Novels/storyboarding. My research I feel has been apt so far, and I have much primary research to dive into aswell as a plethora of resources online and via unorthadox mediums such as films and games. I understand that my proposal is broken english and more notes than an essay; this is to help me refer back to it, to see if I'm straying from the path and if so, why? I don't intend to follow everything perfectly, if something changes it'll be for good reason.
Also in reference to a time plan, my goal as I've said above in the proposal will be to research, study and produce parallel alongside one another. This will help me keep a good flow of work and I really feel like it will benefit me in terms of improving, after all this is why I came to Uni, to find myself and improve. There's always something to improve on, So the studies and research will be relevant to the work I need to produce at the time.
